Is The Iraq War Over?
With Obama’s recent announcement that the troops are coming home and the Iraq War is over, as a veteran of the first Iraq War, I have to question the reality of this.
In the first war, under former President George H.W. Bush, he pulled the plug early, while those leading the troops thought we should go on. President Bush # 1 was a moderate, not a conservative. He did not see the big picture and did not see his own son, President George W. Bush, having to go back and revisit the situation again.
Now, Obama, as far left as they come, has decided to pull out prematurely, again. Will we be back full force in Iraq ten years from now or sooner? Most likely. Heck no, it’s not over. Are you kidding? They’re leaving 50,000 troops in Iraq and Major General Stephen Lanza, the U.S. military spokesman in Iraq said, “Every soldier is a combat soldier. It’s about the change of mission. It doesn’t change who we are or what we do,” “You won’t see this big change on 2 September.” (from Reuters) And even if it were “over” in Iraq (which it isn’t), they’re just moving a whole bunch of soldiers and weapons over to Afghanistan. No, it’s far from over.

What is victory? Will we know it when we have it? Is that even what our government wants? Can it be gained with a “nice civilized war”, or will we need to let our military do whatever they need to do? How many of our young soldiers have to die, to make sure that I am not offended by their excessive violence? Once war begins, peace can only be achieved by the absolute victory of one party or the other. WWII ended with the annihilation of Germany and Japan. Vietnam ended with the conquest of South Vietnam by the North. The Korean War just goes on and on. The Israelis and Palestinians will fight forever until one conquers the other. There can be no peace without victory by one side or the other.
